She was disappointed by her journalistic duties and decided to switch over to the public relations industry. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist in an unassuming production studio straight out of school. In this role, she launched her own public relations company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also launched several marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
